The Silver Lining: Volume 28
Musings on living the good life: food, culture, art, and products designed to inspire. Top picks from me to you on Thursdays.
Hi again. I’ve missed you!
We successfully made it to Boca, soaking in Lee’s family and her two precious nieces. The ‘silver lining’ of moving to an every-other-week posting cadence is I get even more time to find great content for you all. Let’s jump right into it!
Top Tracks
First up is a new 2 track LP from Roosevelt, an old favorite of mine. A singer, songwriter and producer from Germany, Roosevelt has enjoyed success dating back to his debut in 2013. “Echoes” represents his first new material in nearly two years, and we sure have enjoyed it on repeat this week:
—
I featured Bahamas in Volume 11 — and they too are out with new music in the form of new single “Own Alone”:
The cut itself is great, but equally exciting is the news that this is a preview of the release their fifth studio album, Sad Hunk, coming October 9 via Brushfire Records. I’m a fan of all things Bahamas, and can’t wait for their new material!
—
Donny Hathaway is up next with his fantastic live rendition of “Jealous Guy”, a cover of John Lennon’s original recording from ‘71:
Dubbed by Rolling Stone as a “Soul Legend”, Donny Hathaway was an American soul singer, keyboardist, songwriter, and arranger.
This song is a favorite off Live, arguably Mr. Hathaways best album, recorded live at two concerts: side one at The Troubadour in Hollywood, and side two at The Bitter End in Greenwich Village, Manhattan.
—
We close things out from singer-songwriter Hak Baker. From the Isle Of Dogs in east London, Hak’s sound is reminiscent of a British Cayucas, a surf rock sound out of LA. “Venezuela Riddim” is off Bakers 2019 release Babylon:

Skirball Stages
On Saturday August 29th, Skirball is throwing a virtual party featuring a fave of mine: Gavin Turek. Ak Dan Gwang Chil (ADG7) of Seoul, South Korea is also on the bill for this virtual concert. You can RSVP here!
Burn Week and Museum of No Spectators (MoNS)
While I’ve never been to the Playa myself, several friends have had transformative and moving experiences at Burning Man over the years. This year — like most things — the event in the desert looks very different. A crew of veteran Burners have created a virtual Burning Man experience to keep the party going. Burning Man 2020 will take place in the Multiverse - eight endlessly expanding virtual Universes created by Burners, open during Burn Week, starting August 30
One of the virtual things they’re putting on this year is the Musuem of No Spectators:
Out near the dusty perimeter of Black Rock City lies a different kind of museum. The Museum of No Spectators (MoNS) asks a question – what would a museum be like on the playa within Burning Man culture?
Created by architect/artist John Marx, artist Absinthia Vermut, builder Jerry James, and virtual builder Tomek Miksa, MoNS, intended as a non-elitist, accessible response to the "museum‐industrial complex", is now available as a 360 degree virtual experience.
Barefoot Contessa Bootcamp
I had cooking duties last night, so I went with a Greek inspired feast: Lamb lollipop chops, Greek Salad, and the famous crispy potatoes from Volume 8.
I wanted to surface the greek salad dressing recipe I pulled from Ina Garten’s recipe. I added some fresh lemon juice for some vibrancy, and it was a hit!
SKU of the Week
I’ve been working on a new project lately over at The Quality Edit — where we’re curating the web's best brands for today’s discerning consumer. Sound familiar? It’s like SKU of the Week…on steroids. Moving forward I’ll use this space to feature a cool new brand we’ve come across at TQE.
Here’s a recent review I wrote for Brava, the Jetsons inspired Smart Oven from the future. We’re big fans of the Brava in our house, so take a look over at our TQE Instagram and let me know what you think!
Brava has so much to offer (conventional oven, toaster, pizza oven, microwave, air fryer and dehydrator) with different steps and techniques to master each. But like all things -- with a little bit of time, experience and repetition, you can master the Brava and harness its full power.
Social Action
Back home in California, brave first responders are fighting fires across the state. I came across #Food2Firefighters initiative being run out of the Healdsburg Rotary. My father is active in the San Diego Rotary, and I can attest to the good work they do in their respective communities.
