The Silver Lining: Volume 27
Musings on living the good life: food, culture, art, and products designed to inspire. Top picks from me to you on Thursdays.
It’s been an eventful week (more on that in Social Starlettes below). As such, this week’s TSL is on the lighter side.
We’ll be traveling for the next several weeks to see family, and given that the pandemic sadly rages on, I’ll be moving to an every-other-Thursday format for the foreseeable future until we see a return to some sense of normalcy. (I didn’t plan on starting a lifestyle newsletter in a permanent stay-at-home environment, but alas, here we are).
Thanks for all the support thus far, and I’ll see you all again on August 26th from Boca.

Top Tracks
Mélanie De Biasio is a Belgian jazz singer, flutist and composer, and I’m really digging this remix of her song “The Flow”:
There’s a frenetic and beautiful tone to this track, layered nicely with her smooth Jazz vocal on top.

I’ve been working with MGM Studios in my day job on the upcoming Aretha Franklin biopic Respect, due out early 2021. As a result, I’ve been studying and listening to her discography a lot lately. I stumbled across “Day Dreaming”, from her 1972 album Young, Gifted and Black and it’s the perfect groove to add to your weekend chill vibe:

I learned this week of Baba Ali, Hailing from New York but a resident of the UK for the last few years honing both his music and his visual art skill while completing a master's degree in fine art. His sound is incredibly unique, on display with “House”:
Artist Date
The Drive-In is popping off in DTLA, and worth a closer look:
THE DRIVE-IN, led by an all-women collective, reimagines screenings under the stars. With thoughtful curation, we bring people together safely to celebrate the culture that they love. Our program highlights stories created by women, BIPOC & LGBTQ voices. One hundred percent of ticket revenue is donated to non-profit partners.
Table for 2
In a sign of what likely is to be the norm in the coming weeks and months, we’re highlighting sad news that one of our favorite spots in New York is closing in the economic wake of COVID-19.
Bar Sardine — my favorite neighborhood bar/bistro in the West Village, announced it was closing after months of trying to find an arrangement with their landlord. I will miss many things about this tiny spot, most of which their damn fine burger.
Social Action
I came across this WIRED article keeping tabs on all the great work being down across many non-profits helping those in need right now.
I was impressed in particular with Team Rubicon, a veteran-based company that provides services during natural disasters and emergencies:
Team Rubicon is built to serve, and in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, we’ve launched the #NeighborsHelpingNeighbors initiative to meet the needs of our communities through safe individual acts of service.
During this time of the COVID-19 crisis, many people are unable to access, and afford, their most basic needs, including food. Team Rubicon and Patient Advocate Foundation have partnered to provide emergency food assistance to those who have cancer, Multiple Sclerosis or Rheumatoid Arthritis, and have been affected by COVID-19.
Social Starlettes
First off, we have some news!!! So excited to do this crazy thing called life with you Lee Joss. I love you big bunches!
Impressed by Linda Diaz, who won the Tiny Desk 2020 competition:
The vibe I was going for this past weekend:
Call it FASHION, honey:
These guys move quick!
I was totally a Car + Top Hat guy. Figures…
Therapeutic indeed:
And finally, some timely comedy to close out the week….
That’s it for Volume 27. I’m off next week, I’ll see you back here August 26th.
