The Silver Lining: Volume 001
Musings on living the good life: food, culture, art, and products designed to inspire. Top picks from me to you, every Thursday.
Welcome to the inaugural issue of The Silver Lining! Thanks for being here.
I’m Scott Silver, an LA native living on the Westside after a decade in the Bay Area + a few years in Manhattan. I’ve always had a passion for finding and creating the perfect ambiance. I hope these weekly snippets help inspire you to do the same!
Here goes…

Really digging Låpsley’s newest single, Womxn:
The 23 year-old singer hails from London and you may recognize her name from the club remix of Operator, which dropped back in 2016:
I’ll be sure to flag her next show in LA. No tour is currently planned…
Artist Date - c/o Julia Cameron
Frieze Los Angeles, a contemporary art fair with roots in London and New York, returns this weekend for its second year on the Paramount Pictures Studios lot. Last year sold out, so book early!
There will be free air: Artist David Horvitz will be distributing glass vials of authentic L.A. air this weekend at Frieze. Titled Air de LA, it’s inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s 1919 work 50 cc Air de Paris.
Marcell Duchamp’s Air De Paris. In 1949 the ampoule was accidentally broken and repaired, begging the question: Is the air even from Paris anymore?
David Horvitz’s air will be free of charge, smog included. Frieze LA runs Feb 14-16.

Freeze your salad bowls.
When you start prepping a meal for your next dinner party, don’t forget to first throw salad bowls in the freezer to chill. Surprise and delight your guests, and the salad course will be crisp & happy too. Trust!
Put the tip straight to work with this excellent Insalata Verde recipe from NYC favorite Via Carota. You’ll yield plenty of extra dressing; throw it in the fridge for use throughout the week.

While we’re at it — light this candle just before your guests arrive. I first discovered my obsession with this scent walking through the lobby of Ian Schrager’s Miami Beach EDITION. It’s a pretty penny, but damn its worth it.

The secret to good candle hygiene is trimming your wick after each use. The longer the wick, the stronger the flame and the faster your pricey candles will burn. Keeping it trim also avoids black soot residue from forming on the candle’s vessel. This matte black one from Amazon should do the trick!

HT to my friend Mel Freeman, who turned me onto a fantastic Westside happy hour. Michael’s in Santa Monica, best known for its gorgeous patio seen below, runs an all night happy hour from 5:30 - close, Monday - Saturday.
Pro Tip: from 5:30-6 the Daily Cocktail is just $1.79!
Michael McCarty founded Michael’s Santa Monica in 1979, at age 25. #Goals.
Social Starlette
A friend hit my DMs last week with James Clear’s ‘tension of life’ and it’s stuck with me since. Invest in your tomorrows; savor your todays. A delicate balance, indeed.
Social Action
Each week, we’ll highlight one way to give back, either locally or globally. This week we’re featuring Keen: Kids Enjoy Exercise Now.
Keen’s mission is to provide free recreational opportunities to children and young adults with disabilities by pairing them with trained volunteers for fun, noncompetitive activities.
If you’re looking to donate with your time, consider becoming a volunteer. Thanks to friend Oren Gabriel for shining a light on Keen’s work in the LA community.
That’s it for Volume 001! New issues of The Silver Lining drop weekly on Thursdays.
